Event 2

My other event was going to the open house here at Rhode Island College to support the youth development major. We talked to incoming freshman about the youth development program and our experiences in our college career. We were helping to build our YDEV community and that is one of our anchors in YDEV. Community is something that we have learned about in class. When working with youth and organizations we need to build a good relationship with the community. Being a part of the community is important as a youth worker because it helps get to know the area that you are working with. One day I hope to be a CEO of a nonprofit and a huge part of that job is being a part of the community. Using this event to help build our community and making the program known is a learning point. As CEO I hope to build and help the community that I work in and hope to have youth lead the community. As youth workers we can help lead youth to make decisions in their community. In this event we helping to

Event 1

One of the events I attend was the Henry Barnard 2 nd grade class teaching students how to make lanterns for the president’s house. This event was held at the Alex and Ani school of arts building on campus. I went in and one of the 2 nd graders came and taught me how to make a lantern out of cloth, a few straws and some string. We would draw on the cloth Christmas themed pictures. The 2 nd grader taught me these things and I had a conversation with the 2 nd grader about how things were going. We talked about how school was going for him and what sports he played and other general stuff. This event showed how youth could be leaders and teach in their communities. The second grader was very good at teaching me how to make a lantern and it was cool to see someone at his age instruct a college kid. When I was that age I would be too nervous to instruct anyone let alone a college kid. This event is showing that having youth lead is good for youth and have them build leadership qualitie

Youth Development Ideology

Image
There are three different ideologies that we have learned about. Risk, Resiliency, and prevention and positive youth development are two ideologies. The third ideology is the one that I scored the least on and that is critical youth development. This Ideology has youth and adults working together to make the world a better place. Youth workers help give the youth the strategies and knowledge to help youth work in the community. They teach youth how to help their community and work with their culture and contribute to the world. This is the ideology the quiz said I align with and I would agree with because I want to help youth make their community a better place. I could also see my self as a little of each, but I think that all youth workers need to be a little of each.

Injustice

Image
There are many injustices in the world today and not everyone is treated equal even when it is obvious that they should. There are many people who do not get hired for a job because of their gender, race, or religion. There are many forms of injustice in the world as well and that could happen in a workplace, in the community, or even in your own home. There was a time when working with youth that I saw an injustice happen. There was a kid who was always teased for personal reasons and was treated unfairly. I pulled the whole group and talked to everyone about being nice to each other. I told them that we are all the same and no one should be treated poorly or looked down upon. I was always told treat everyone with respect and that is how I was raised. It was natural for me to treat everyone like how I wanted to be treated because that was all I knew from an early age. Later on I was able to lead anti-bullying activities and at that time I wish that I could have done these activiti

Youth In Action

Youth in Action has given a safe space to youth to become leaders and promote this leader ship in their community.  This program gives encouragement and power to help the youth become leaders for their generation. They give a safe space to the youth to come and talk about controversial subjects in today's society. While we were at youth in action two teens lead the activity that they did with us and I though that they were excellent. You can see the results of this program through these students, Youth in Action has given them the strength to be competent leaders. Youth in Action's Mission "   Youth In Action gives the space for youth share their stories, practice leadership, and create change in their communities"

Those Who Care

Teachers always care for their students and some teachers go into teaching because they are helping the youth. Michelle was a teacher we read about in the reading and she does so much preparation even before she gets to school. She talks about getting food in the morning for the students and making sure they were well fed. She talks about how kids would fall asleep in class and how having a snack really helped them get through her class and the day. She goes out of her way and uses her own money to buy her students snacks and that is the best form of caring for students. A teacher uses their own money to help her students which there are teachers in the world who would not even do that for their class. Those are the best teacher, they teach because the love working with the youth. I think for most youth workers they are doing it for the youth and not for their own personal benefit. I have seen teachers who had snacks in their class room and they had different things for students. They
My YDEV Story             When I was a kid I went to the Audubon Society Camp for a week a two for one summer. We learned about ecosystem and marine life and we learned about marshes and rivers. We learned many things about wild life and it was in an educational setting. Most summers I would spend the day with my mother. She was a teacher so in the summer she had off, we would go to the beach, hang out with friends, and go visit my grandparents in Westerly. When I got to high school I started to look for a summer job and the first one was at a small camp. It was in Bristol and I was an aide for the art instructor at this camp. I would help kids with arts and crafts stuff and I would clean up. Then the year after I applied to work at the YMCA and I started working as a counselor that summer. I would play games with the group I was assigned with and that group was the youngest group kindergarten to second grade. It was recreational activities and games like soccer and kickball, we
